Virals: Declan Rice leads West Ham social media boycott

West Ham have joined a football-wide boycott of social media this bank holiday weekend in order to make a stand against online abuse.

Football clubs and authorities, along with those from other sports have decided to stop posting across social media in an attempt to attract attention to the perceived lack of action against abusers on platforms.

On-field leader Declan Rice lead from the front on his own Twitter account on Friday afternoon when the 22-year-old posted a strong statement with the hashtag StopOnelineAbuse.

Rice and teammates will join the boycott that is due to end on Tuesday and as such won’t be posting on any form of social media across the entire weekend.

There is no doubt more needs to be done in order to stop abuse and in particular, make those responsible accountable for their actions.

Whether or not the current stance brings about the desired results, it’s a start and one that has been joined in unison across the professional footballing landscape.

On the field, David Moyes’ West Ham side face Burnley on Monday evening at Turf Moor, looking to keep their top-four aspirations alive with another important victory.
