Nuno reveals why he rejected West Ham exit after relegation

Nuno Espírito Santo says personal commitment and a shared sense of responsibility convinced him to remain as West Ham United head coach following relegation.

The Portuguese coach will lead the Hammers in the Championship after deciding against leaving the club at the end of last season.

Speaking in an official West Ham interview, Nuno said he never seriously doubted whether he should continue at the London Stadium.

“It’s a personal commitment, it’s a professional commitment that you have to the club, to the people of the club,” he said.

“If you know me, for sure you understand my decision. Never doubts, it’s a personal commitment.”

West Ham confirmed in May that Nuno would stay after discussions with the board. The club made an immediate Premier League return its main target for the 2026/27 campaign.

Nuno embraces West Ham promotion mission

Nuno said his relationships with the staff, players and people around the training ground played a major role in his decision.

“It’s the people, here in the training ground, our friends, the players, what we felt, the sense of mission that we have ahead of us,” he added.

“It’s something that goes deep. It’s trying to make things right, to put West Ham back in the Premier League.”

The 52-year-old has previously led Wolverhampton Wanderers out of the Championship, winning the division with 99 points in 2017/18.

West Ham will hope that experience helps a squad facing significant changes following relegation. Several senior players have attracted transfer interest, while the club must also strengthen key areas before the season begins.

As Read West Ham recently examined, Nuno’s decision to stay has helped make the Hammers strong early favourites for promotion.

His message is now clear. Staying was not simply a contractual decision, but a commitment to repairing last season’s damage and returning West Ham to the top flight.
