West Ham are “in talks” with Marseille over the signing of midfielder Morgan Sanson, according to Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol on Twitter.
The 24-year-old impressed for the Ligue 1 club in 2018/19, scoring 12 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions.
Marseille’s failure to reach either the Champions League or the Europa League has left Sanson looking for a fresh challenge, however.
The Hammers are on the lookout for midfield additions this summer, with Roma star Maxime Gonalons another who has been linked with a move to east London.
Marseille are thought to be “willing to listen to offers” for Sanson, who is valued at €35million.
West Ham are not alone in expressing an interest, with Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Wolves although believed to be in the mix.
The decision looks set to be up to the player himself, with various offers on the table.
Sanson is yet to be capped by France at senior level, but won 11 caps for the U21s between 2013 and 2016.
5 potential summer midfield targets for West Ham
Andre Gomes
A move for the Barcelona midfielder has been mooted, following a season on loan at Everton.
It does feel unlikely, however, with the Toffees thought to be confident of signing him permanently.
Franck Kessie
The AC Milan midfielder is a big talent with great box-to-box ability.
He would be a perfect addition in the middle of the park, and at 22, age is on his side.
Kevin Strootman
Like Sanson, Strootman is currently at Marseille, but a lack of European football next season means he could leave this summer.
The Dutchman would be a strong addition to West Ham’s side, with his quality and experience undoubted.
Isaac Hayden
Hayden will leave Newcastle United this summer, despite impressing at St James’ Park.
He wants to move back down south for family reasons and West Ham may consider eyeing up a move.
Jonjo Shelvey
Another Newcastle star, Shelvey could be someone else West Ham have a look at.
The midfielder’s disciplinary issues are well-known, but he is also a technically gifted player who may be maturing with age.
