West Ham suffer crushing blow in deal to sign Barcelona midfielder

Barcelona youngster and West Ham target Alen Halilovic is poised to make a loan move to Sporting Gijon, according to Inside Futbol.

Halilovic only arrived at the Nou Camp last summer, and was ultimately part of the Barcelona B side that were relegated to the third tier of Spanish football.

During the summer, he has been linked with numerous clubs as the Catalans seek a club that’ll give the youngster regular playing time in order for him to progress.

As well as the Hammers, Bundesliga side Hamburg had also been reported to be interested in the youngster with a loan deal for the midfielder however talks didn’t get any further.

However, the Croatian looks set to be making the temporary move to Sporting Gijon , the Spanish side who have just been promoted to La Liga following their 2nd place finish in the Segunda division last year.

Former Barcelona defender Abelardo Fernandez is the manager at Gijon and the mutual relationship between the two clubs seems to be what settled this deal.

On Friday, Halilovic’s agent met with the newly-promoted club to seal the deal for his client. The clause that Gijon have reportedly abide be is to play the youngster in 60% of the club’s games in the 2015/16 season.

Last season, the 19-year-old made his Barcelona debut as he was used in the Copa Del Rey game v Elche.
