West Ham United have received encouraging news regarding defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, with reports indicating the Greece international could return from injury before the November international break.
According to The Athletic, scans and further assessments have shown that the knee problem Mavropanos sustained late in Saturday’s 3-2 Championship defeat to Southampton is not as serious as first feared.
Earlier updates had raised concerns of a lengthy absence lasting several weeks to momths, with some outlets suggesting only a “miracle” would prevent a significant spell on the sidelines.
That headache appears to have been averted, representing a major short-term relief for Nuno Espírito Santo and West Ham.
Mavropanos tipped for short-term return
The Hammers face three league fixtures before the international break comes next month, and their key player will be missed.
Should Mavropanos recover in time for the Blackburn game, he would miss only two matches, but it’s still an outside aim.
A slower recovery, which could be for the greater good, could see him absent for all three, with his next possible outing against Preston North End on 21 November after the break.
No definitive return date has been set, depending on the recovery process for Mavropanos.
The 28-year-old has been a key figure for the Hammers this season, at both ends, including his five Championship goals, making him the club’s second-highest scorer at present.
