Tomas Soucek etched his name further into West Ham United history on Saturday.
The Czech midfielder scored his 50th goal for the club in the dying minutes of the 3-2 Championship defeat to Southampton at the London Stadium. Coming off the bench, Soucek produced a thumping late consolation in added on time.
The strike marked a significant personal landmark for the 31-year-old, who has been a consistent and committed presence in the Hammers’ midfield since joining from Slavia Prague in January 2020.
The consolation goal against the Saints made him only the sixth West Ham player in the 21st century to reach a half-century of goals for the club, joining the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio, Carlton Cole, Mark Noble and Marlon Harewood.
What a pity such a notable goal came in a disappointing, deflating loss.
Longevity, value, and impact from Tomas Soucek
Across nearly seven seasons and more than 280 appearances, the Czech star has delivered time and again from midfield with his aerial ability, relentless work rate and high-level finishing.
Saturday was another example, but the occasion was overshadowed by the result.
Southampton took control early, and got the job done despite West Ham’s late pressure and Soucek’s effort.
The defeat was their first at home since August and only their second of the league campaign, squandering another landmark in the process.
Soucek reflected on the mixed emotions afterwards:
“I would like to celebrate in a better way [50th goal], but obviously I am happy that I reached that many goals.
“I’m proud of that, but now it’s time to think about the team and the position in the league and that’s the most important thing.”
The milestone underlines Soucek’s continued value and longevity at the club.
Having recently extended his contract until 2028, the hardworking midfielder continues to deliver for the Hammers as they chase promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking.
Tomas Soucek will be a crucial figure along the way, in what is hopefully a temporary sojourn in the second tier.
