Alan Pardew has questioned whether West Ham can match the Championship’s physical demands despite rating their technical quality among the division’s best.
The former Hammers manager believes Nuno Espírito Santo’s side still have questions to answer as they pursue an immediate Premier League return.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, in comments reproduced by Hammers News, Pardew highlighted the need to compete when matches become scrappy.
“But have they got the fight? Have they got the desire? Can they match the physicality of the opposition?” he asked.
His assessment also pointed to the challenge of recovering between league fixtures, with technical ability only one part of sustaining a promotion campaign.
Alan Pardew sets West Ham a Championship challenge
West Ham’s October schedule will provide an early test of their ability to handle a quick turnaround.
After hosting QPR on Friday 9 October, the Hammers travel to Lincoln City on Wednesday 14 October and Swansea City on Saturday 17 October.
That means three league matches in nine days, including consecutive away trips. Our West Ham next five fixtures guide sets out the full sequence.
Nuno must also prepare for QPR without suspended midfielder Mohamadou Kanté, creating an immediate selection decision. We have examined the options available to replace Kanté.
The practical challenge is maintaining control when opponents prevent West Ham from playing comfortably. Winning second balls, defending pressure and managing tired legs will matter alongside the quality of their passing.
Pardew’s verdict leaves Nuno with a straightforward task: turn the squad’s ability into consistent results through the demands of the league calendar.
