West Ham United goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was left on the bench for Denmark’s 3-2 Nations League defeat against Norway for tactical reasons rather than injury.
Filip Jørgensen was handed his first competitive senior start for Denmark in Oslo, with Hermansen remaining an unused substitute.
Denmark boss Brian Riemer has now explained the decision.
Riemer Explains Hermansen Decision
Speaking to TV 2 Sport before the match, via Danish outlet Campo, Riemer stressed that there is little separating his two goalkeepers.
“We are fortunate to have two super goalkeepers who are in form,” he said.
Riemer explained that Jørgensen’s greater reach influenced his selection because of Norway’s threat from set pieces, crosses and curling efforts from wide areas.
He also described the battle for the position as a close competition.
That provides reassurance for West Ham supporters after Hermansen had started Denmark’s previous competitive fixture.
Hermansen Could Feature Against Wales
Hermansen remains with the Denmark squad and will hope for an opportunity when they host Wales on Sunday.
West Ham’s official international schedule confirms Denmark then face Portugal before travelling to Wales again on 4 October.
Every appearance involving Nuno Espírito Santo’s players is being recorded in our West Ham international break tracker.
Hermansen therefore remains firmly in contention for international minutes before returning to West Ham ahead of the Championship restart against QPR.
