West Ham summer target earns Italy call-up after stunning goal run

West Ham United’s failed move for Mohamed Ali Zoma is beginning to look increasingly significant after the forward earned his first senior Italy call-up.

The Hammers reportedly attempted to sign Zoma from Nürnberg during the summer transfer window, but their bid was rejected by the German club.

Since then, the 22-year-old has responded emphatically.

Zoma has scored six goals in his opening six league appearances this season and his performances have now earned him recognition from Roberto Mancini.

According to Hammers News, Zoma has been included in Mancini’s latest Italy squad following his impressive start to the campaign.

The forward has scored six times in six matches for Nürnberg, including a hat-trick on the opening weekend.

His latest goal came against Karlsruhe and continued the form which has made him one of the standout attackers in the German second tier.

Nürnberg manager Miroslav Klose has also praised the forward’s progress.

“He’s been training fantastically all the time. He’s a fantastic player for us,” Klose said.

The former Germany striker later described Zoma’s senior international recognition as “completely exceptional”.

West Ham had summer interest in Zoma

West Ham were linked with Zoma during the summer as Nuno Espírito Santo rebuilt his attacking options following relegation.

ReadWestHam covered those links earlier in the window when reports around West Ham’s interest in Zoma were initially dismissed.

However, subsequent reporting claimed Nürnberg rejected an offer worth around £17m.

Zoma was reportedly disappointed that the proposed move did not materialise.

The forward has responded in the best possible way since the window closed, producing the strongest goalscoring spell of his Nürnberg career.

Mancini has now rewarded that form by bringing him into an Italy squad featuring several young attacking options.

West Ham ultimately strengthened their forward line through other deals during a major summer rebuild.

Zoma’s subsequent rise does not mean West Ham made the wrong decision, particularly with Nürnberg unwilling to accept their reported offer.

It does, however, make his development worth watching.

If his current form continues and he establishes himself at senior international level, the price required to sign him in a future window is likely to be significantly higher than the figure West Ham were reportedly prepared to pay this summer.
