West Ham United striker Taty Castellanos remains the subject of a spitting allegation following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Millwall.
The allegation relates to an incident involving Millwall goalkeeper Filip Marschall during the second half at The Den.
Millwall subsequently lodged a formal complaint, but there has been no finding that Castellanos spat at Marschall and no suspension or charge has been announced.
Here is what has been confirmed so far and what could happen next.
What is Taty Castellanos accused of?
The incident occurred in the 65th minute with Millwall leading West Ham 2-0.
Castellanos closed Marschall down as the goalkeeper prepared to clear the ball.
Marschall subsequently approached referee Paul Tierney and appeared to indicate that he believed he had been spat at.
Millwall later lodged a formal complaint regarding the allegation.
Reuters reported that both managers acknowledged the accusation after the match, although neither had seen the incident themselves.
There has been no finding against Castellanos and the allegation remains unproven.
What has Nuno said about the Castellanos allegation?
Nuno Espírito Santo was asked about the incident following the derby.
“I’m aware of the allegation,” the West Ham head coach said.
“I didn’t see the images, I didn’t speak with Taty.
“I cannot go much further on that, I’m sorry. For me to answer that, I have to see it.”
Nuno therefore stopped short of offering a judgement on what happened.
That remains important while the allegation is unresolved.
Could Taty Castellanos receive a six-match ban?
A significant suspension could follow if a spitting offence is proven.
Reuters reported that a proven spitting offence can carry a six-match ban under Football Association regulations.
That does not mean Castellanos has been handed a six-game suspension.
No such punishment has been announced.
The distinction is important: Millwall have made an allegation and lodged a complaint, but that is not the same as the FA finding Castellanos guilty of an offence.
What happens next for Castellanos?
Any disciplinary development will depend on the evidence surrounding the incident and the subsequent process.
Footage from the match could form part of that evidence.
For now, however, West Ham supporters are waiting to see whether the allegation results in any formal disciplinary action.
Until that happens, Castellanos remains without an announced suspension arising from the incident.
West Ham do not return to Championship action until Queens Park Rangers visit London Stadium on Friday, 9 October.
That gives time for further clarity to emerge during the international break.
The Hammers already know they are set to be without another player against QPR, with Mohamadou Kanté facing a one-match suspension following his red card at Millwall.
West Ham await further developments
The allegation added another controversial element to an extraordinary afternoon at The Den.
West Ham recovered from 2-0 down through Kanté and Konstantinos Mavropanos before finishing the match with ten men.
The Castellanos situation is separate from the result.
For now, the key facts are straightforward: an allegation has been made, Millwall lodged a complaint, the allegation remains unproven and no charge or suspension has been announced.
This page will be updated if the Football Association, West Ham, Millwall or another relevant authority provides a further disciplinary update.
