Nuno Espírito Santo has given his West Ham United players a simple, direct instruction before they walk out at The Den today: ignore the noise and play the game.
The Hammers face Millwall in Saturday’s lunchtime clash, marking the first competitive meeting between the two fiercest rival clubs in more than 14 years.
While West Ham arrive on a strong run of four consecutive EFL Championship victories, the hostile atmosphere in South London promises to provide a completely different psychological examination.

Nuno: “Things Are Decided on the Pitch”
Speaking during his official pre-match press duties on the official West Ham United website, Nuno acknowledged that today’s fixture will feel fundamentally different from a standard league game.
“This date stood out for both clubs,” Nuno admitted, calling the derby a “special game” before setting out the exact mentality he demands from his squad:
“We know things are decided on the pitch, so we need to be focused, ignore the noise and play the game.”
That task may be easier said than done. West Ham have not played at The Den competitively since 2011, and none of Nuno’s current first-team squad has experienced this particular fixture in claret and blue.
To help bridge the experience gap, Nuno has leaned on first-team coach Steve Potts. The former West Ham defender experienced the intensity of the rivalry firsthand during his playing days and has provided valuable context for the squad throughout the week.
Playing the Game, Not the Occasion
Millwall boss Alex Neil has already publicly questioned how the Hammers will handle the hostile environment at The Den. Beyond the noise from the stands, Nuno has identified a more specific tactical threat: Millwall’s physical prowess and set-piece delivery.
Having already discussed Nuno’s warning regarding Millwall’s promotion challenge, the key for West Ham will be maintaining emotional discipline without becoming passive in physical duels.
Fifth Consecutive Win in Sight
There is far more than local pride on the line at 12:30 PM.
A victory today would secure West Ham five consecutive league wins for the first time since February 2006, cementing their push at the top end of the Championship table before the international break.
With Jarrod Bowen and Joel Piroe leading an attack that has scored 20 goals across seven league fixtures, West Ham possess the firepower to win. But as Nuno made clear, tactical quality will mean nothing if the squad lets the atmosphere dictate their performance.
Ignore the noise. Play the game.
