Edson Álvarez has been left out of Rafael Márquez’s first Mexico squad, with his lack of football at West Ham United cited as a major factor.
The 28-year-old has not played a single minute in the Championship this season after failing to secure a move away from London Stadium during the summer transfer window.
Álvarez remains a West Ham player, but his position under Nuno Espírito Santo has become increasingly difficult.
That situation has now followed him onto the international stage.
Edson Álvarez left out of Mexico squad
Mexico have announced their first squad under new head coach Rafael Márquez ahead of the upcoming international fixtures.
Álvarez is one of the most notable omissions.
According to TUDN, his lack of minutes for West Ham has been identified as a key sporting reason behind the decision.
The report notes that Álvarez has not featured across the opening seven Championship matches.
Márquez had already warned earlier this month that reputation alone would not guarantee international selection.
Speaking about Álvarez’s situation, the Mexico boss said every player needed to be “at a good level” and contributing regularly for their club.
That has not happened for Álvarez.
The midfielder remains part of West Ham’s squad but has fallen behind Arne Engels, Lewis Orford, Mohamadou Kanté and other midfield options.
Read West Ham previously reported that Álvarez is expected to remain at the club until at least January after a summer departure failed to materialise.
West Ham situation now affecting Álvarez internationally
Álvarez’s Mexico omission underlines the consequences of his continued inactivity.
He has been one of his country’s most important players for several years and featured prominently during the 2026 World Cup.
A move away from West Ham appeared possible throughout the summer.
Real Sociedad held discussions over a deal and Álvarez asked West Ham to allow him to leave.
No agreement was ultimately completed.
That left Nuno with another senior midfielder, but Álvarez has not forced his way back into the Championship side.
West Ham’s strong start has made that task even more difficult.
Nuno’s midfield combinations have helped the Hammers win four consecutive league matches and move to the top of the Championship.
There has therefore been little incentive for the manager to make major changes.
January decision becoming increasingly important
Álvarez’s next opportunity to resolve his future may now arrive in January.
Until then, his immediate challenge is simply earning minutes.
The Mexico omission adds another reason for the midfielder to attempt to force his way back into Nuno’s plans.
Álvarez has previously been an automatic international selection when fit and playing regularly.
That status can no longer be taken for granted.
Márquez’s first squad has sent a clear sporting message.
If Álvarez wants to regain his place with Mexico, his situation at West Ham may first need to change.
