Met Police issue warning before Millwall vs West Ham derby

The Metropolitan Police have issued a fresh warning to supporters ahead of West Ham United’s long-awaited trip to Millwall on Saturday.

The Championship rivals meet at The Den for the first time since 2012, with the fixture kicking off at 12.30pm.

Given the history surrounding the derby, police have confirmed that additional safety measures will be in place around South Bermondsey.

That includes a Section 35 dispersal order, which will allow officers to remove anyone causing disorder in the local area.

In a statement shared ahead of the game, the Metropolitan Police confirmed they have worked with both clubs in an attempt to ensure the fixture passes safely.

The statement said: “We want fans to enjoy the match safely and have worked with both clubs to help this happen.”

Police also reminded supporters that the Sporting Events Act 1985 remains in force, meaning anyone attempting to enter the stadium while intoxicated can be refused access.

A Section 35 dispersal order will also be active around the area, giving officers additional powers to deal with disorder.

West Ham supporters travelling to the game will also be directed towards a specific route from South Bermondsey station.

According to West Ham Zone’s report on the police plans, the station will be subject to restrictions for Millwall supporters at certain times as away fans are guided to and from the ground.

West Ham return to The Den after 14 years

Saturday’s game is the first competitive meeting between the two clubs in more than 14 years.

That long absence has only increased attention around the fixture, with both managers already speaking about the atmosphere expected at The Den.

Millwall boss Alex Neil has questioned how West Ham will handle the environment, with Read West Ham covering his warning to Nuno Espírito Santo’s side ahead of the derby.

The match will also be the 100th competitive meeting between the clubs.

West Ham travel across London sitting at the top end of the Championship and will be aiming to continue their strong early-season form.

Read West Ham has also detailed the latest Millwall vs West Ham injury and team news ahead of Saturday.

The police message now adds another important element to the build-up.

Supporters travelling to The Den are being urged to follow instructions and avoid behaviour which could result in removal from the area or being denied entry to the stadium.
