Rita Guarino confirms Laia Codina boost before West Ham Women vs Everton

West Ham United Women have received a major fitness boost ahead of Sunday’s Women’s Super League meeting with Everton after Rita Guarino confirmed Laia Codina is available again.

The Spain international has been absent but is now ready to return to contention as the Hammers look to build on last weekend’s 2-1 victory over London City Lionesses.

Ffion Morgan, however, remains unavailable.

Speaking during her pre-Everton press conference, Guarino confirmed that Morgan is continuing her recovery.

“Laia Codina is available for this game, but Ffion Morgan is still out,” the West Ham boss said.

“She’s working very hard and in a good position to come back as soon as possible.”

Laia Codina return gives West Ham major boost

Codina’s availability gives Guarino another experienced defensive option at an important stage of the season.

The head coach made clear that the 26-year-old’s influence extends beyond her performances on the pitch.

“It’s important [to have Codina back]. Not just on the pitch but off it,” Guarino said.

“Her leadership and experience is important for our team in the way we want to play.”

West Ham secured their first WSL victory of the campaign against London City last weekend, with Kelly Gago and Viviane Asseyi scoring in the 2-1 win.

Deadline-day arrival Saki Kumagai also impressed on her full debut alongside captain Katie Zelem.

Guarino believes that midfield partnership could continue after praising the pair’s chemistry.

“They know what to do with the ball and they also work well out of possession,” she said.

“I think they have the chemistry to work together, they speak the same football language.”

West Ham target back-to-back WSL wins

Everton now provide the next test at home on Sunday.

The fixture carries additional significance for Gago, who will face her former club after opening her West Ham account against London City.

Guarino believes the French forward still has significant room to improve.

“Kelly Gago has a lot of potential to grow,” she said.

“She trains very well and performs in a way where she can show her strength.”

West Ham will now hope Codina’s return provides another lift as they attempt to secure consecutive league victories.
