West Ham’s Joël Veltman injury situation remains a question before Saturday’s Championship derby against Millwall.
The defender came off after 30 minutes of Friday’s 6–0 victory over Wrexham. He then missed Tuesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Fulham.
Kyle Walker-Peters replaced him against Wrexham and started the cup tie, giving Nuno Espírito Santo an established alternative.
However, Veltman’s absence against Fulham does not, by itself, confirm that he will miss the trip to The Den.
Joël Veltman injury: what has Nuno said?
Speaking after the Wrexham victory, Nuno acknowledged the problem without providing a diagnosis or recovery timetable.
“He felt something. That’s the sad part of this game,” Nuno said in comments reported by Hammers News on 12 September.
“But at the same time, let’s see how he is.”
Those comments followed the original injury. They should not be treated as a fresh assessment of his chances against Millwall.
A further update from Nuno would clarify whether the defender can return for Saturday’s 12.30pm kick-off.
Walker-Peters gives West Ham an alternative
Walker-Peters made an immediate attacking contribution after replacing Veltman against Wrexham, supplying two assists.
His performance prompted our assessment of Walker-Peters’ growing claim for a West Ham starting place.
He also featured in the confirmed West Ham side against Fulham, while Veltman remained absent.
For Nuno, the distinction is between availability and selection. Walker-Peters offers cover, but Veltman’s fitness still affects the options available for the derby.
The visit renews the West Ham–Millwall rivalry, with the Hammers returning to The Den for their first competitive match there since 2011.
