West Ham United Women secured their first Women’s Super League victory of the season with a 2-1 win over London City Lionesses on Saturday.
Goals from Kelly Gago and Viviane Asseyi gave Rita Guarino’s side a deserved advantage before Daniëlle van de Donk pulled one back for the visitors late in the second half.
The Hammers held on to claim three important points after losing 3-1 to Tottenham on the opening weekend.
London City arrived in east London with confidence after beating Manchester United 2-1 in their first game of the campaign, making West Ham’s response even more encouraging.
Gago gives West Ham the breakthrough
West Ham took the lead through Gago after 21 minutes.
The forward was one of four players brought into the starting XI by Guarino, alongside Saki Kumagai, Eva Nyström and Inès Belloumou.
Read West Ham covered the confirmed West Ham Women XI before kick-off, with Kumagai handed her first start against the club she left earlier this month.
Gago rewarded Guarino’s selection decision by putting the hosts in front.
The goal allowed West Ham to take a 1-0 advantage into half-time.
Asseyi doubles West Ham advantage
West Ham then made the perfect start to the second half.
Asseyi struck in the 48th minute to double the advantage and put Guarino’s side in control.
It continued the forward’s positive start to the campaign after she also scored during last weekend’s defeat at Tottenham.
Sky Sports WSL shared one of the key moments from the contest, which can be viewed in the embedded post below.
London City refused to disappear from the contest.
Van de Donk reduced the deficit in the 74th minute, setting up a tense finish as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
West Ham, however, survived the late pressure to secure a 2-1 victory.
First WSL points for West Ham
The result gives West Ham their first points of the 2026/27 WSL season.
It also represents an important response from Guarino’s side following the Tottenham defeat.
There were already encouraging signs in that opening fixture, particularly after Kumagai made an immediate impact from the bench.
Read West Ham previously looked at Kumagai’s impressive debut against Tottenham, and the Japan international has now followed that with her first start.

For Guarino, though, Saturday’s priority was getting the first victory on the board.
