West Ham United are reportedly in talks over a mutual termination of Maxwel Cornet’s contract.
The 29-year-old remains a Hammers player after returning from a second loan spell with Genoa this summer, but he has yet to make a competitive appearance during the 2026/27 campaign.
A fresh report from West Ham Zone, citing ExWHUEmployee and The West Ham Way, claims discussions are now underway to end Cornet’s contract early by mutual agreement.
No agreement has yet been announced by West Ham.
Cornet could leave West Ham as free agent
Cornet joined West Ham from Burnley in August 2022.
The club’s official player profile confirms he signed a five-year contract with an additional one-year option, meaning his initial deal runs until 2027.
If a mutual termination is agreed, Cornet would become a free agent and could pursue a move outside the normal transfer window.
That would bring an end to a difficult four-year spell in east London.
Cornet arrived after scoring nine Premier League goals for Burnley during the 2021/22 season, but injuries prevented him from establishing himself at West Ham.
He has since spent time away from the club with Southampton and twice at Genoa.
West Ham’s official profile confirms his latest Genoa loan produced eight Serie A appearances during 2025/26.
Nuno has not used Cornet this season
Cornet returned to Rush Green during the summer and was given another opportunity to work under Nuno Espírito Santo.
ReadWestHam covered Cornet’s return to West Ham training as Nuno faced a decision over his future.
He even scored during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Colchester United in July.
However, Cornet has not subsequently forced his way into Nuno’s competitive plans.
Soccerbase currently records no appearances for Cornet in 2026/27, while West Ham still list him among their first-team players.
West Ham have significantly reshaped their attacking options following relegation, with Manor Solomon, Edvin Austbø and others now competing for places around captain Jarrod Bowen.
A contract termination would therefore provide Cornet with the opportunity to find regular football elsewhere while removing another player who appears to sit outside Nuno’s plans.
For now, though, the situation remains at the talks stage.
