West Ham United travel to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night looking to turn their recent revival into a first away Championship victory of the season. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side arrive after back-to-back wins, while Bolton have lost three league games in succession and were thrashed 4-0 by Millwall on Saturday.
The Hammers have transformed the mood around London Stadium in less than a week.
A 4-2 victory over Wolves was followed by Saturday’s 3-0 win against Derby County, moving West Ham to eight points from their opening five Championship matches.
Bolton have experienced the opposite trajectory.
Steven Schumacher’s newly-promoted side began with four points from their opening two league games but have since suffered three consecutive defeats, leaving Tuesday’s meeting at the Toughsheet Community Stadium increasingly important for both clubs. Bolton’s current record stands at one win, one draw and three defeats, with four goals scored and nine conceded.

Bolton form provides West Ham with major opportunity
Bolton’s Championship campaign started promisingly enough.
They beat Preston North End 2-1 before securing a goalless draw away to Queens Park Rangers.
Things have deteriorated rapidly since.
Their league run now reads:
- Bolton 2-1 Preston – Win
- QPR 0-0 Bolton – Draw
- Bolton 0-1 Lincoln City – Loss
- Sheffield United 3-2 Bolton – Loss
- Millwall 4-0 Bolton – Loss
Saturday’s result was comfortably the most damaging.
Millwall scored four without reply at The Den as Bolton suffered their third consecutive Championship defeat.
Schumacher’s side have therefore conceded eight goals across their last two matches.
West Ham, meanwhile, have suddenly discovered some attacking rhythm.
They scored four against Wolves before Joël Piroe, Edvin Austbø and Mohamadou Kanté found the net against Derby.
Nuno still felt there was room for improvement after Saturday’s win, but two victories and seven goals represent meaningful progress after West Ham failed to win any of their opening three league matches.
West Ham team news vs Bolton
Nuno’s biggest consideration may be workload rather than a major new injury problem.
West Ham played on Saturday and return to action on Tuesday before hosting Wrexham only three days later.
The manager described the schedule as “very tight” after beating Derby and could therefore use more of his increasingly deep squad.
Edvin Austbø is the obvious player pushing for promotion.
The £10m Deadline Day arrival came from the bench to score West Ham’s second against Derby before assisting Kanté for the third.
We have already backed the Norwegian to make his full debut in our West Ham predicted XI against Bolton.
Kyle Walker-Peters is another potential change after Joël Veltman started at right-back on Saturday.
Deadline Day addition Morato made his debut from the bench against Derby and could also come into contention if Nuno chooses to rotate his centre-backs.
West Ham’s Saturday matchday squad also included Adama Boiro, Lewis Orford, Keiber Lamadrid and Kanté, giving Nuno significantly more flexibility than he had earlier in the campaign.
Any fresh fitness information from Monday’s pre-match media duties should provide a clearer indication of how heavily Nuno intends to rotate.
West Ham still searching for first away league win
There is one significant warning despite the contrast in form.
West Ham are yet to win away in the Championship.
They drew 2-2 at Burnley before being held 1-1 by Watford, meaning both of Nuno’s league victories have come at London Stadium. Their last away league victory actually stretches back to March.
We examined the full sequence in our West Ham away record feature.
Tuesday therefore represents an opportunity to remove one of the few obvious negatives remaining from West Ham’s recent improvement.
The performance at Derby also provided encouragement defensively.
After conceding in every previous competitive fixture this season, West Ham recorded their first clean sheet and restricted Derby to very little meaningful threat.
Producing that same control away from home is the next challenge.
Bolton hold remarkable home record against West Ham
History provides another warning.
West Ham’s most recent competitive meeting with Bolton came in the League Cup in September 2017, when the Hammers won 3-0 at London Stadium.
Trips to Bolton have been a completely different story.
West Ham’s last victory away to the Trotters came on 18 November 1995, when goals from Ian Bishop, Tony Cottee and Don Hutchison secured a 3-0 Premier League win.
Since then, the Hammers have failed to win any competitive visit to Bolton.
Their most recent trip ended in a 3-0 Premier League defeat in April 2011. The head-to-head record confirms West Ham’s remarkable 31-year wait for another victory on Bolton soil.
That historical record should add another layer of interest to Tuesday’s match, even if the current circumstances look much more favourable for Nuno’s side.
Bolton vs West Ham prediction
There are reasons for caution.
West Ham have not yet won an away league game, Bolton should produce a response in front of their own supporters after Saturday’s humiliation and Nuno may rotate during an exhausting run of fixtures.
The current trajectories of the two teams are difficult to ignore, though.
West Ham have greater individual quality, considerably more depth following the end-of-window additions and seven goals across their previous two matches.
Bolton have conceded seven in two away defeats this week and enter the game on a three-match losing streak.
This could be tighter than the respective weekend results suggest, particularly during the opening hour.
West Ham’s options from the bench should eventually tell.
Prediction: Bolton 1-2 West Ham
A third consecutive Championship victory would take the Hammers onto 11 points and could move them firmly into the early promotion places.
More importantly, it would show Nuno’s improving side can finally reproduce their London Stadium form away from home.
