West Ham’s £40m Todibo nightmare exposed as Nuno fallout sparks exit

Jean-Clair Todibo’s West Ham United exit appears to have been driven by far more than relegation, with fresh reporting revealing the defender’s relationship with Nuno Espírito Santo had broken down badly before his move to Lens.

The French international is set to return to Ligue 1 on a season-long loan without an option to buy after West Ham agreed terms with Lens.

But L’Équipe now reports that Todibo’s relationship with Nuno had become cold, with the situation effectively reaching breaking point when he was substituted after just 25 minutes against Newcastle in May.

For a player West Ham committed around €40million to signing permanently, it represents a remarkable collapse in just two seasons.

Todibo and Nuno relationship had broken down

Todibo’s desire to leave West Ham following relegation was already clear.

L’Équipe reports that the 26-year-old did not want to play in the Championship after the Hammers dropped out of the Premier League.

But the French outlet goes further.

It says Todibo was even less enthusiastic about continuing under Nuno, describing the relationship between the pair as cold.

The decisive moment reportedly came during West Ham’s 3-1 defeat against Newcastle on 17 May, when Nuno withdrew Todibo after only 25 minutes.

That appears to have left little prospect of the defender rebuilding his position under the Portuguese coach.

West Ham had already agreed a loan with Lens and allowed Todibo to undergo a medical before the latest details surrounding his departure emerged.

West Ham’s huge Todibo gamble has unravelled

The numbers make the situation particularly uncomfortable.

Todibo initially joined West Ham from Nice before the deal became permanent, with L’Équipe previously reporting that the Hammers committed around €42m to the transfer.

He remains contracted to West Ham until 2029.

Yet rather than entering this Championship season as one of Nuno’s most valuable senior defenders, he is now being sent back to France without a purchase option attached.

That means West Ham have not permanently removed the financial problem either.

Lens get the opportunity to revive a France international’s career, while West Ham retain the long-term risk attached to a player who no longer appears to have a future under their current manager.

The West Ham Way has also reported that getting Todibo away from the club had become one of the Hammers’ key objectives this summer.

ExWHUEmployee reported that Todibo had been involved in “heated” altercations with managers and suggested his departure had become increasingly important to those inside the club.

Lens move gives Todibo escape route

Lens have now provided that route.

L’Équipe reports that Todibo has agreed to reduce his salary in order to make the transfer possible.

That is significant given the defender had also attracted interest from Marseille.

The French outlet says Todibo had been open in principle to joining Marseille, but the club’s financial difficulties prevented them from completing the move.

Lens eventually moved ahead and secured a straight season-long loan.

The absence of an option to buy gives Todibo the chance to rebuild his reputation without West Ham receiving any guaranteed long-term resolution.

From the player’s perspective, the attraction is obvious.

Lens can offer Champions League football and a return to Ligue 1, where Todibo previously established himself with Nice.

Nuno now needs another West Ham defender

The consequences for West Ham are immediate.

Todibo’s departure leaves another gap in a defensive unit that has already undergone significant change this summer.

West Ham have held talks over Wolves defender Ladislav Krejci, with the Czechia international offered to the Hammers during the closing stages of the window.

Michael Keane has also been considered, while teenager Airidas Golambeckis started the 1-1 draw against Watford.

Nuno therefore needs West Ham to balance Todibo’s departure with sufficient defensive depth.

The manager is already under pressure after taking only two points from the opening three Championship games, with our analysis of the brutal five-match league run ahead highlighting how quickly the situation could become uncomfortable.

Having another senior defender leave makes the final hours of the transfer window even more important.

Todibo exit leaves West Ham with uncomfortable questions

A loan may be the best available solution now.

That does not make the wider story any less damaging.

West Ham committed a huge fee to Todibo, saw the relationship between player and manager deteriorate, suffered relegation and are now sending him elsewhere without a permanent exit secured.

Todibo deserves the opportunity to restart his career in France.

West Ham, meanwhile, are left hoping a season at Lens can restore enough value to make the situation easier to resolve next summer.

For a defender signed as a major investment, Todibo’s West Ham story has unravelled remarkably quickly.
