Airidas Golambeckis may have provided one of the few clear positives from West Ham United’s frustrating afternoon at Watford.
The 18-year-old was handed his first Championship start by Nuno Espírito Santo at Vicarage Road, lining up alongside Max Kilman as West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw.
While the result extended the Hammers’ winless league start, Golambeckis produced an assured display which suggested Nuno now has another genuine first-team defensive option.
West Ham’s official starting XI announcement confirmed the Academy graduate was making his full league debut after being trusted from the start against Watford.
Golambeckis earns his Championship opportunity
Golambeckis’ inclusion was not completely out of the blue.
The centre-back had already featured heavily around Nuno’s senior squad during pre-season and started West Ham’s impressive Carabao Cup victory at Southampton earlier in the week.
He was also part of the young group given opportunities during the summer, with West Ham’s coaching staff repeatedly bringing Academy players into first-team environments.
The club confirmed during pre-season that Golambeckis is an England Under-19 international who was part of the West Ham side that won the U18 Premier League Cup in 2025.
His development has been building steadily rather than arriving overnight.
Golambeckis joined West Ham at a young age and progressed to captain the club’s Under-21 side before becoming increasingly involved with the senior squad.
He was also called into England’s Under-19 setup last season after previously representing Lithuania at youth level. West Ham’s Academy international update detailed his progression into the Young Lions setup.
Golambeckis gives Nuno something to think about
Starting a teenage centre-back away from home in the Championship is not a token gesture.
It was a significant show of faith from Nuno.
Golambeckis responded with a composed enough performance to justify that decision, even as West Ham again failed to collect three points.
West Ham Zone rated him 7/10, making him one of the Hammers’ stronger performers at Vicarage Road.
That matters given the competition around him.
Max Kilman remains established, while Konstantinos Mavropanos was left out of the starting XI at Watford. Joël Veltman can also operate centrally despite starting at right-back on Saturday.
Golambeckis therefore does not need to become an automatic starter immediately.
He simply needs to prove that Nuno can trust him when required.
Saturday was a meaningful step towards doing exactly that.
West Ham Academy becoming increasingly important
Golambeckis is not the only Academy player forcing his way into the conversation.
Lewis Orford, Josh Ajala, Ezra Mayers and others have all been used during the opening weeks of the campaign, with several impressing during the 4-1 cup victory at Southampton.
West Ham’s reliance on younger players is partly a consequence of a squad undergoing major change.
Malick Diouf and James Ward-Prowse both departed on Friday, while the club remain active in the transfer market before Tuesday’s deadline.
Our analysis of West Ham’s rebuild following Diouf’s £40m exit highlighted how important squad depth will be during a demanding Championship season.
Academy players can help provide some of that depth without West Ham needing to buy an experienced player for every vacancy.
The challenge is identifying which youngsters are genuinely ready.
Golambeckis has now supplied Nuno with compelling evidence.
Watford start can be beginning rather than destination
One League start should not lead to unrealistic expectations.
Golambeckis is still developing, and centre-back is a position where mistakes can be particularly costly.
But Saturday represented considerably more than another academy cameo.
Nuno selected him from the start in a Championship match while under considerable pressure to earn West Ham’s first league victory.
Golambeckis handled that responsibility well enough to emerge as one of the few positives from an otherwise frustrating afternoon.
West Ham remain winless after the 1-1 draw at Watford, but Nuno may have discovered another player capable of contributing across the season.
For Golambeckis, the breakthrough is no longer something waiting to happen.
It has started.
