West Ham United reportedly offered Troy Parrott a potentially more lucrative route before the striker chose Real Betis instead. Fresh details suggest the 24-year-old prioritised playing in La Liga and the Champions League over the financial package available in east London.
West Ham spent much of August pursuing Parrott as Nuno Espírito Santo looked to strengthen his attack, but the Hammers eventually switched their attention to Joël Piroe.
Troy Parrott chose Betis over West Ham route
According to The Times, Parrott had the opportunity to make a potentially more lucrative move to West Ham.
The Republic of Ireland international instead selected Betis because of the footballing opportunity available in Spain.
Playing in La Liga and competing in the Champions League proved particularly attractive to a forward who has rebuilt his career following a difficult start in English football.
That adds important context to West Ham’s failed pursuit.
The Hammers had pushed hard to bring Parrott back to England, with ReadWestHam previously reporting that West Ham were making a major play to sign the former Tottenham striker.
Former West Ham forward Tony Cottee had even backed the potential transfer as a “perfect partnership” for Parrott and the Hammers.
West Ham could offer Parrott a central role in a promotion challenge, but they could not replicate the European platform available at Betis.
West Ham turned to Joel Piroe
West Ham eventually moved on.
Talks over Parrott failed to produce an agreement and Nuno’s recruitment team switched focus to Leeds United striker Piroe.
ReadWestHam reported the subsequent breakthrough when Piroe was set for a West Ham medical after the club accelerated negotiations.
The Dutchman has already made an immediate impact, scoring against Charlton on his debut and becoming the 100th West Ham player to score on his first appearance.
Betis, meanwhile, have now officially completed Parrott’s transfer from AZ Alkmaar.
Real Betis confirmed Parrott has signed a contract until 2031, with the Spanish club highlighting the 31 goals and 12 assists he produced for AZ last season.
West Ham therefore did not simply lose out because another club offered more money.
The latest detail suggests Parrott made a sporting choice, sacrificing the possibility of a more lucrative move for the chance to test himself in one of Europe’s major leagues and in the Champions League.
For West Ham, Piroe’s instant contribution at least means missing out on their previous target has not left Nuno without the additional goalscorer he wanted.
