New signing Piroe provided the major positive for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

The striker, making his first West Ham appearance following his loan move from Leeds United, fired home in the 74th minute after Charlton goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo had initially denied Castellanos.

Piroe’s goal brought the Hammers back into the contest and set up a frantic finish.

West Ham then received a huge opportunity to rescue a point when Conor Coventry was penalised for handball in stoppage time.

Castellanos stepped forward but struck his penalty against the base of the post as Charlton held on for a 2-1 victory.
