West Ham set for UK’s biggest crowd after Charlton sell-out

West Ham United are set to attract the biggest football attendance anywhere in the UK this weekend after selling out London Stadium for Saturday’s Championship meeting with Charlton Athletic.

All 62,500 seats are reportedly sold for West Ham’s first home league game since relegation from the Premier League.

The size of the crowd is particularly striking because Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will be playing in the second tier while the Premier League begins its new season elsewhere.

The Sun reports that West Ham are expected to record the highest attendance in British football this weekend.

West Ham crowd set to surpass every Premier League fixture

London Stadium is one of the largest football grounds in the country.

Only Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have larger capacities among regular English club venues, and both United and Spurs are playing away on Saturday.

Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Tottenham visit Brentford.

That leaves West Ham in position to welcome a larger crowd than any Premier League club hosting a game over the opening weekend.

It provides another indication of the level of support retained by the Hammers following relegation.

ReadWestHam previously reported on the scale of West Ham’s support after more than 50,000 season tickets were sold despite the club dropping out of the top flight.

London Stadium crowds remain huge after relegation

Saturday will not be the first major attendance of West Ham’s season.

A crowd of 53,369 watched Nuno’s side beat Portsmouth 3-1 in the Carabao Cup first round earlier this month.

Sky Sports recorded that figure at London Stadium, with the attendance setting a new competition record for a first-round tie.

Another significant increase is now expected against Charlton.

West Ham’s Championship fixture list placed the London derby as the club’s first home league game following last weekend’s 2-2 draw away at Burnley.

The result at Turf Moor may have frustrated supporters, but demand for Saturday’s match has clearly not suffered.

West Ham are attempting to secure an immediate Premier League return this season.

A capacity crowd for the first home Championship fixture provides Nuno’s side with a reminder of the support behind that promotion push.
