West Ham United have condemned an “offensive and divisive” chant heard during Sunday’s Championship draw at Burnley and urged supporters not to repeat it ahead of the club’s first home league game of the season.
The chant, which contained an anti-Palestinian message, was heard from a section of the travelling West Ham support during the 2-2 draw at Turf Moor.
Reuters reports that it appeared to be directed towards new signing Manor Solomon, although West Ham did not name the Israel international in their statement. (reuters.com)
The Hammers have now called for supporters to back the team without causing offence or creating division.
West Ham issue message before Charlton clash
West Ham stressed the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion within the club and its East London community.
The statement comes two days before Nuno Espírito Santo’s side host Charlton Athletic at London Stadium in their first home Championship fixture of the campaign.
West Ham’s official ticket information confirms Saturday’s game has reached the Ticket Exchange stage, with another large crowd expected in east London.
The Guardian also reports that the chant was aimed at Solomon, who scored on his West Ham debut against Burnley. (theguardian.com)
Solomon joined West Ham from Tottenham earlier this month and started on the left at Turf Moor.

The club already operates a zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory chanting and abuse.
Its supporter conduct guidance states that individuals found engaging in discriminatory behaviour can face sanctions including bans and possible referral to the police.
Saturday’s meeting with Charlton now provides the first opportunity for West Ham’s home support to respond to the club’s message.
Nuno’s side will also be looking for their first Championship win after surrendering a two-goal lead at Burnley.
