West Ham handed tough away trip to Championship rival in second round of Carabao Cup

West Ham United will travel to Southampton in the second round of the Carabao Cup after the two Championship clubs were paired together in Monday evening’s draw.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side booked their place in round two by beating Portsmouth 3-1 at the London Stadium on Saturday, with Taty Castellanos scoring twice and Jarrod Bowen also on target.

The Hammers have now been handed an away trip to St Mary’s, with the tie scheduled to take place during the week commencing Monday 24 August.

Southampton vs West Ham set for Carabao Cup

West Ham entered the southern section of Monday’s regionalised draw after making an encouraging start to their competitive campaign against Portsmouth.

ReadWestHam explained earlier today how the Carabao Cup second-round draw would work, with Southampton among the potential opponents available to the Hammers.

Nuno’s side will now have to progress away from home if they are to reach round three.

Southampton secured their own place in the draw with a 2-0 victory at Colchester United on Saturday. The club’s official match report confirmed Saints opened their season with a comfortable win in Essex.

The tie will provide another early examination for West Ham following their relegation to the Championship.

Saturday’s victory over Portsmouth was played in front of 53,369 supporters, setting a new Carabao Cup first-round attendance record. ReadWestHam reported on Monday morning that the crowd surpassed the previous record by more than 18,000.

West Ham will not have that home advantage in round two, with a trip to St Mary’s now standing between them and a place in the next stage.

The EFL has scheduled second-round fixtures for the week commencing 24 August, with the exact date, kick-off time and broadcast arrangements for Southampton against West Ham still to be confirmed.
