Lewis Orford has described his first senior start for West Ham United as a “dream come true” after Nuno Espírito Santo handed the academy graduate his opportunity against Portsmouth.
The 20-year-old started Saturday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory at the London Stadium after spending much of pre-season around Nuno’s first-team squad.
Speaking in a fresh interview with West Ham’s official website, Orford said playing in front of more than 50,000 supporters was a moment he had dreamed about throughout his time in the academy.
“It’s a big moment for me and all my family,” he said.
“To start a game in front of 50,000 is a dream come true.”
Lewis Orford makes his West Ham opportunity count
Orford’s selection represented another significant step for a midfielder who has gradually worked his way into Nuno’s plans over the summer.
He was trusted from the start against Championship opposition and helped West Ham recover from an early setback to progress into the second round. The occasion carried extra significance for a player who has spent the majority of his development inside the club’s academy.
There is now a genuine question over how substantial his first-team role could become this season.
ReadWestHam reported on Sunday night that fellow youngster Mohamadou Kanté also believes he is ready to play a major part in the promotion campaign. Nuno has given both midfielders significant exposure to senior football this summer as he assesses the balance of his squad before the Championship opener.
West Ham are still looking at possible midfield additions, but their academy players have given the manager alternatives from within.
Orford has been particularly difficult to ignore. His Portsmouth start followed an encouraging pre-season in which he regularly featured alongside established senior players and continued to earn Nuno’s trust.
The challenge becomes greater from here.
West Ham begin their league campaign against Burnley on Sunday, when the demands will be considerably different from a first-round cup tie. Competition for places will also increase as injured players return and further signings potentially arrive.
Orford, though, has already taken an important step.
A first senior start was once something he dreamed about while progressing through the academy. His performances this summer have now given Nuno a decision over how quickly the midfielder should be given another one.
