West Ham United are set to sign Joel Veltman on a free transfer after the former Brighton defender successfully completed his medical.
The Hammers moved quickly for the 34-year-old after considering several experienced defensive options, including his former Brighton teammate Adam Webster.
Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof reports that Veltman has now been medically cleared and is expected to sign a short-term contract in London once the final details are completed. Blaauwhof described the West Ham move as almost done on Wednesday evening.
Joel Veltman set to become West Ham signing
Veltman is available without a transfer fee after his six-year spell with Brighton ended when his contract expired this summer.
The Netherlands international made 191 appearances for the Seagulls and can operate at both right-back and centre-back. His versatility and leadership were reportedly important factors in West Ham choosing to progress with him.
The development also represents a change from West Ham’s position only 24 hours ago.
ReadWestHam reported on Tuesday night that Adam Webster was believed to be on the verge of joining the club. However, ExWHUEmployee subsequently clarified that talks had taken place with Webster but Veltman’s ability to provide cover in two positions made him the preferred option.
Veltman played 24 times for Brighton across all competitions last season and brings significant experience from spells with Ajax and the Seagulls.
Nuno Espírito Santo has been looking to strengthen his defensive options before Saturday’s competitive opener against Portsmouth.
Formal confirmation from West Ham is still required. However, with Veltman’s medical completed successfully and the remaining contract details being finalised, the Dutchman now appears close to becoming the club’s first summer arrival.
