West Ham could swap £27m striker for 24-year-old winger

West Ham are considering a surprise swap deal with Lazio involving Niclas Füllkrug and Matteo Cancellieri.

The proposed Matteo Cancellieri transfer would allow Nuno Espírito Santo to add another winger while moving on a striker who is not expected to feature prominently this season.

Füllkrug returned to West Ham this summer after AC Milan decided against making his loan move permanent. The 33-year-old remains under contract until 2028, but another departure has been expected following the Hammers’ relegation.

Cancellieri has already been identified as a potential attacking addition as West Ham rebuild their wide options.

West Ham consider Matteo Cancellieri transfer swap

The Laziali reports that West Ham and Lazio could exchange Cancellieri and Füllkrug in a surprise swap deal, citing Italian newspaper Il Messaggero via La Lazio Siamo Noi.

The proposal could suit both clubs. Lazio want to add another centre-forward, while Cancellieri is entering the final year of his contract and could leave rather than depart for nothing next summer.

The 24-year-old scored four goals and supplied two assists in 30 Serie A appearances last season. He operates primarily from the right but can play across the front line.

West Ham’s need for another winger has increased significantly following Crysencio Summerville’s departure. ReadWestHam reported on Sunday that Nuno is also considering Everton winger Dwight McNeil after the £68million Summerville sale.

Cancellieri would offer another option without requiring West Ham to commit a large cash fee if Füllkrug is included in negotiations.

There are still obstacles before any agreement can be reached. Cancellieri would need to accept Championship football, while Lazio must decide whether Füllkrug is the right striker for their rebuild.

However, a swap would potentially solve problems for both clubs as West Ham look to accelerate their incoming business before the new season.
