West Ham suffer setback as Celtic reject opening Engels bid

Celtic have rejected West Ham United’s opening approach for Arne Engels as Nuno Espírito Santo attempts to strengthen his midfield.

The transfer remains alive, but the Scottish champions have made it clear that the Hammers must significantly improve their offer.

West Ham opened talks with Celtic on Friday after identifying the Belgium international as a leading midfield target.

However, Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has now confirmed that the first proposal has been turned down.

“The West Ham bid for Arne Engels doesn’t remotely meet our valuation,” O’Neill told BBC Sport.

The 22-year-old remains under contract at Celtic until 2028, leaving the Scottish champions in a strong negotiating position.

Arne Engels West Ham transfer hits first obstacle

West Ham’s interest had appeared to be progressing quickly after reports claimed Engels had reached a verbal agreement over a possible move to the London Stadium.

ReadWestHam reported on Friday that West Ham had stepped up talks to sign the £25m-rated Celtic midfielder.

Celtic’s rejection represents the first significant obstacle in those negotiations.

The Scottish champions previously rejected a £25m package from Nottingham Forest for Engels in February, underlining the level of offer required to seriously test their position.

West Ham have the financial capacity to return after generating significant money through player sales this summer. Engels has been targeted to add energy, progressive passing and creativity following the departure of Mateus Fernandes.

The Arne Engels West Ham transfer is therefore not over. However, West Ham must now decide whether to meet Celtic’s valuation or move towards another midfield target before their Championship campaign begins.
