Why Arne Engels can replace Mateus Fernandes at West Ham

West Ham United appear to be closing in on a midfielder capable of filling the space left by Mateus Fernandes.

Arne Engels moving to the London Stadium would not provide an identical replacement, but the Celtic midfielder has the energy and technical quality required to become central to Nuno Espírito Santo’s rebuild.

West Ham have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Engels over personal terms. Celtic are expected to demand at least £20million for the 22-year-old, who remains under contract until 2028.

ReadWestHam has already reported that the club have stepped up talks to sign Engels, with the Belgian emerging as the leading candidate to replace Fernandes.

What West Ham lost with Mateus Fernandes

Fernandes offered more than goals and assists during his only season at the London Stadium. He could receive possession under pressure, carry the ball through midfield and recover quickly when West Ham lost it.

His intensity also suited Nuno’s approach. Fernandes covered ground, competed in midfield and helped move West Ham forward after regains.

Those qualities have been missing throughout pre-season. As discussed in ReadWestHam’s assessment of the club’s slow summer rebuild, Fernandes provided energy and ball progression before completing his £85million move to Tottenham.

Engels would need to assume much of that responsibility. However, he would probably perform the role differently.

Why an Arne Engels West Ham move makes sense

Engels is comfortable operating as a number eight but can also play deeper. He receives the ball cleanly, looks for progressive passes and offers a threat from set pieces.

The Belgium international recorded five goals and three assists in 2,010 Scottish Premiership minutes last season. He also finished the campaign strongly, contributing against Rangers before scoring in Celtic’s final two league fixtures. FotMob’s Arne Engels data highlights his attacking output from central midfield.

West Ham will expect to control more possession in the Championship than they did during their relegation season. Engels appears well suited to that change.

He can help circulate the ball against compact opponents and arrive late around the penalty area. His delivery could also improve a West Ham side containing strong aerial players such as Tomáš Souček.

Engels is 6ft tall and has experience playing in high-pressure matches for Celtic. He has also appeared in European competition, which should reduce the adjustment required at the London Stadium.

Engels would change the West Ham midfield

Engels should not be viewed as a direct copy of Fernandes.

Fernandes was more explosive when driving through pressure and had already demonstrated that he could handle Premier League duels. Engels offers greater control and may become more influential when West Ham dominate the ball.

Nuno would still require defensive protection around him. If Edson Álvarez leaves, West Ham may need another midfielder who can defend transitions and allow Engels to move forward.

The potential deal still carries risk because of the difference between Scottish football and a demanding Championship season. However, Engels is only 22 and already possesses the technical foundation West Ham need.

Replacing Fernandes with one player was always going to be difficult. Engels could instead help Nuno construct a more controlled midfield, while costing considerably less than the fee received from Tottenham.
