Real Sociedad make complicated offer for West Ham midfielder

Real Sociedad’s unusual proposal for Edson Alvarez could give West Ham an immediate exit route, but it would also leave a large part of the midfielder’s value dependent on a future transfer.

Spanish newspaper AS reports that Sociedad are prepared to pay €7.5m, around £6.4m, for 50 per cent of Alvarez’s economic rights. The Mexico international appears unlikely to feature prominently under Nuno Espírito Santo and remains under contract until 2028.

West Ham have reportedly valued Alvarez at around £12.8m. Real Sociedad’s initial payment would therefore cover only half of the club’s asking price. Previous reports have also confirmed club-to-club discussions, while Ajax continue to explore a possible reunion with the midfielder.

How the Edson Alvarez Real Sociedad deal could work

The phrase “50 per cent of his economic rights” does not suggest that West Ham and Sociedad would share sporting control of Alvarez.

Sociedad would register the midfielder and decide how he is used. West Ham would most likely retain a contractual entitlement to part of any future transfer fee.

FIFA prohibits outside investors from owning part of a player’s economic rights. However, its regulations do not classify the two clubs involved in a transfer, or a former club, as third parties. A sell-on agreement can therefore operate legally, provided West Ham receive no influence over future sporting or transfer decisions.

The exact wording remains important. West Ham could receive 50 per cent of the full future fee, or only 50 per cent of Sociedad’s profit. Those arrangements would produce significantly different returns.

West Ham would sacrifice guaranteed money

A £6.4m initial payment would remove Alvarez from the wage bill and create another senior squad space.

However, West Ham would accept considerably less than their reported valuation. Alvarez would also need to secure another substantial transfer for the retained interest to become valuable.

If West Ham received half of a future gross fee, Sociedad would need to sell him for approximately £12.8m merely for the Hammers’ combined return to reach their current asking price.

Alvarez is already 28. His resale value may fall if he spends several seasons in Spain, suffers another difficult campaign or eventually leaves Sociedad when his contract expires.

West Ham have raised significant funds this summer, but Nuno still needs immediate money to complete his midfield rebuild. The club are already working on a deal for Arne Engels, while Amadou Koné has emerged as another target.

West Ham should demand stronger guarantees

A creative structure could help West Ham complete a difficult sale, especially if no club meets their £12.8m valuation.

Sociedad’s proposed terms still place too much risk on a future transfer. West Ham cannot assume Alvarez will rebuild his value and move again for a major fee.

A higher guaranteed payment with a smaller sell-on percentage would provide greater protection. Alternatively, the Hammers could seek achievable add-ons based on appearances or European qualification.

The Edson Alvarez Real Sociedad deal offers a route out for both parties, but £6.4m alone would represent a disappointing return on a player signed for more than £30m.

West Ham should remain open to negotiation. They should not surrender half of Alvarez’s current value without firm guarantees over how the remaining money could arrive.
