West Ham should explore a move for Fabio Vieira after Hamburg submitted a formal offer to Arsenal. Vieira wants to return to Hamburg permanently, but the Bundesliga club may struggle to meet Arsenal’s financial demands. That situation could create an opening for West Ham if they decide to formalise their interest.

West Ham’s midfield struggled to create chances during the goalless pre-season draw against Rangers. Nuno lacks a player who can receive possession between the lines and unlock a compact defence.
ReadWestHam’s assessment of the four major holes remaining in West Ham’s squad identified a controlling midfielder as the main recruitment priority. Vieira would offer more creativity than West Ham’s existing central options.
He averaged 1.3 key passes per Bundesliga match last season. That figure would have placed him ahead of every West Ham player, including Jarrod Bowen.
Vieira can operate as a number 10 or move inside from the right. He is comfortable receiving the ball in crowded areas and can create shooting opportunities from outside the penalty area.
His set-piece delivery could also help West Ham against Championship opponents who defend deep. Nuno’s side will need players capable of producing chances without relying entirely on transitions.
However, Vieira would not solve West Ham’s defensive midfield problem. He lacks physical strength and does not consistently win tackles, so Nuno would need to use him ahead of two disciplined midfielders.
Hamburg offer gives West Ham an opportunity
Hamburg have already strengthened their position by submitting a formal offer to Arsenal.
Daily Cannon reports that Hamburg presented concrete financial terms, but neither club has changed its stance. The German side can reportedly offer around €10million, possibly paid through instalments.
That amount is significantly below the €20million to €22million purchase option included in Vieira’s loan agreement. Arsenal may therefore wait to discover whether another club will offer more.
West Ham should have the resources to exceed Hamburg’s proposal after raising substantial funds through player sales. The more difficult task would involve persuading Vieira to leave the Bundesliga for the Championship.
Vieira enjoyed regular football at Hamburg and wants the move to become permanent. West Ham would need to offer him a prominent role and a convincing plan for immediate promotion.

West Ham must choose their creative target

Neither player would provide the defensive control West Ham also require. However, both possess the technical quality needed to create against organised Championship teams.
