Ajax are working to complete an Edson Alvarez to Ajax transfer three years after selling the midfielder to West Ham.
The Hammers reportedly want around £12.5million for the Mexico international, who is also attracting interest from Real Sociedad.
Ajax have already made contact with Alvarez through technical director Jordi Cruyff. The 28-year-old spent four seasons in Amsterdam before joining West Ham for around £35.4million in 2023.
Mike Verweij reports that Ajax are serious about bringing the midfielder back, although they may need to complete player sales before meeting West Ham’s valuation.
Real Sociedad are also exploring a move. Their interest could place pressure on Ajax to advance negotiations before another club reaches an agreement with West Ham.
Edson Alvarez to Ajax complicated by outstanding payments
The financial structure of Alvarez’s original move could influence negotiations.
GOAL reports that West Ham still owe Ajax approximately €14million from the €38million agreement completed three years ago. Ajax could explore whether those outstanding instalments can form part of a new transfer arrangement.
However, West Ham would prefer a permanent sale rather than another loan. Alvarez spent last season with Fenerbahce before returning to east London, while an earlier proposed move to FC Köln stalled over his salary.
ReadWestHam recently reported that Alvarez wants another move away. The club also accept that a fresh start would suit both parties as Nuno Espírito Santo reshapes his Championship squad.
Alvarez made 147 appearances during his first Ajax spell and remains familiar with the club. A return would also offer regular top-level football as he enters the final two years of his West Ham contract.
The Edson Alvarez to Ajax deal remains complicated rather than advanced. Ajax must create room in their budget, while West Ham will want an agreement which provides a permanent solution.
