Lukasz Fabianski has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41.
The retirement brings an end to a distinguished career which included 216 appearances and a European trophy with West Ham United.
Fabianski confirmed his decision through an emotional statement on Instagram. The former Poland international described retiring as a “difficult decision” after spending more than two decades in senior football.
The goalkeeper left West Ham when his contract expired at the end of June. His final season was disrupted by a back problem which affected his right leg and restricted him to one EFL Trophy appearance for the club’s Under-21 side.
Fabianski joined the Hammers from Swansea City in 2018 and immediately established himself as first choice. He made all 38 Premier League starts during his first campaign and was named Hammer of the Year.
His West Ham record included 628 Premier League saves and 42 clean sheets. He was also part of the squad which won the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023, ending the club’s 43-year wait for a major trophy.

Fabianski’s longevity was built on consistency rather than spectacle. His positioning, handling and ability to make important saves gave West Ham stability during several demanding Premier League campaigns.

Fabianski also represented Arsenal, Swansea, Legia Warsaw and Poland. He made 376 Premier League appearances and won 57 international caps during a career which included the FA Cup, Polish league title and Conference League.
The Lukasz Fabianski retirement does not mean he will leave football completely. He intends to support and develop young goalkeepers, ending his announcement with the message: “Once a goalkeeper. Always a goalkeeper.”
