West Ham United have missed out on Steve Nickson after Wrexham agreed to appoint the Newcastle United recruitment chief as sporting director. The Hammers previously explored bringing the 61-year-old to east London, but he will now lead Wrexham’s football operation.
The Athletic reports that Nickson has signed a contract and will begin work at the Racecourse Ground on 2 September. He is currently serving his notice period at Newcastle and will move after the summer transfer window closes.
Wrexham created the sporting director role as part of their push for Premier League promotion. Manager Phil Parkinson remained informed throughout the negotiations and approved the appointment.
West Ham held positive talks with Nickson earlier this summer and considered placing him at the head of their football operation. Wrexham later entered the race and have now secured his services.

Nickson has spent 15 years at Newcastle and became head of recruitment in 2017. He worked on senior signings including Sven Botman, Joelinton and Ayoze Pérez, while also helping recruit several young prospects.
West Ham viewed that experience as valuable following relegation to the Championship. However, the Hammers have since appointed Nils Koppen as director of player recruitment.
Koppen’s remit centres on identifying and signing players. Nickson will take a broader role at Wrexham, with responsibility across senior and youth recruitment.
Missing out does not leave West Ham without recruitment leadership. However, it removes an experienced candidate who could have provided greater oversight across the football department.
The focus now falls on Koppen, Nuno Espírito Santo and the West Ham hierarchy. They must deliver a joined-up transfer strategy as the club attempts to secure promotion at the first opportunity.
Wrexham have made a significant appointment before another Championship campaign. West Ham must ensure their own structure provides Nuno with the support required during a crucial rebuild.
