West Ham are considering a move for Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate as Nuno Espírito Santo looks to add more creativity to his squad. The Japan international has made clear that he is open to leaving the Scottish champions this summer.
The i reports that Hatate is among the midfield options being assessed by West Ham. His passing range, movement and ability to operate in several roles have attracted interest from the Hammers.
West Ham have struggled to replace Lucas Paqueta since his departure in January. Hatate would offer a different profile, with the 28-year-old comfortable receiving possession in deeper areas or moving closer to the forwards.
Hatate has publicly spoken about his desire to leave Celtic. He wants to test himself in one of Europe’s leading leagues after a successful spell in Glasgow.
Reo Hatate could add creativity to West Ham midfield
Hatate is not a direct replacement for Paqueta, but he can help West Ham progress the ball through midfield. He also has the awareness to find teammates between defensive lines.
His versatility would give Nuno several options. Hatate can play as an attacking number eight, in a midfield two or from the left when West Ham change shape.
West Ham have already been linked with several Celtic players, including Hatate. Nils Koppen’s knowledge of Scottish football could help the club judge whether the midfielder represents good value.
Celtic remain in a strong negotiating position because Hatate is contracted until 2028. However, the player’s wish to leave could give West Ham an opening if they decide to make a formal offer.
No bid has been reported at this stage. Even so, Hatate would address a clear need in Nuno’s squad before the Championship season begins.
