‘Every team wants to beat West Ham’ – Hermansen sends warning

Mads Hermansen has warned his West Ham United teammates to expect every Championship opponent to raise their level against the Hammers next season.

The Denmark goalkeeper knows what is required to escape the division after winning the Championship title with Leicester City in 2023/24.

Hermansen earned a place in the division’s Team of the Season during that successful campaign. He is now sharing his experience with a West Ham squad targeting an immediate Premier League return.

Speaking to West Ham’s official website, Hermansen said several teammates had already asked him about the demands awaiting them.

“Every team wants to beat West Ham as well,” he said. “I think that always gives an extra five or ten per cent for the opponent.”

Hermansen explains scale of West Ham challenge

The 26-year-old highlighted the physical nature of the Championship and the pressure West Ham will face across a 46-game campaign.

Few members of Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad have recent experience in the division. Hermansen believes his knowledge can help prepare them for the intensity and relentless schedule.

West Ham begin the season among the promotion favourites, but ReadWestHam’s Championship guide explained why major additions are still required before the opening fixture against Burnley.

Hermansen also praised the support the players will receive. More than 50,000 season-ticket holders are expected at London Stadium, while thousands will follow the team around the country.

“We’re really grateful as players for all the support that we get,” he said.

The goalkeeper believes West Ham must repay that backing through their performances and approach every fixture with the intention of winning.

Hermansen’s promotion experience could prove important during difficult periods. The Championship rarely allows teams to rely on reputation alone, particularly when opponents view them as the division’s biggest scalp.

West Ham have the resources to challenge near the top. Hermansen has made clear that matching the work rate of their opponents will be just as important.
