Edson Alvarez’s proposed loan move to FC Köln could collapse because the midfielder’s salary remains beyond the Bundesliga club’s current wage structure.
West Ham United and Köln have agreed the basis of a season-long loan, but the German side still need to reach an agreement with Álvarez. The Mexico international would have to accept a significant pay cut before the move could progress.
Köln continue to view the 28-year-old as their leading midfield target. However, they have also started exploring alternatives because the talks over personal terms have not produced a breakthrough.
West Ham still need to resolve Álvarez future
Sky Sport Germany reports that Köln have identified Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Ellyes Skhiri as their main alternative. Skhiri previously spent four seasons with Köln and would present a more affordable option if the club abandons its pursuit of Álvarez.
West Ham want to move Álvarez on after he spent last season on loan at Fenerbahçe. The Hammers remain open to another temporary departure, despite initially preferring a permanent sale for a player they signed from Ajax for around £35m in 2023.
ReadWestHam previously reported that West Ham and Köln had reached an agreement in principle, with the player’s wages already identified as the main obstacle. The latest development suggests neither side has yet found the compromise required to complete the deal.
Álvarez remains under contract until 2028, but he appears unlikely to hold a central role in Nuno Espírito Santo’s Championship plans. Keeping him would add an experienced international to the squad, although his salary and desire to leave could create an unwanted distraction.
West Ham now need either Álvarez or Köln to soften their position. If the talks collapse, the club will have to find another buyer before the closing weeks of the window.
