Nuno Espirito Santo Blocks West Ham Move For Dael Fry

Nuno Espirito Santo has reportedly blocked West Ham United from pursuing Dael Fry, giving the club’s summer rebuild an early standards test.

Claret & Hugh report that Fry had been on West Ham’s defensive list before Nuno decided the club should be aiming higher. The 28-year-old has since joined Birmingham City after leaving Middlesbrough.

Birmingham confirmed the signing on Friday, describing Fry as a highly experienced defender following his departure from Boro. The Sun reported that he had interest from several clubs, including West Ham, before choosing Birmingham on a three-year deal.

ReadWestHam had already assessed Fry as a practical free-transfer option for Nuno after his Middlesbrough contract expired. Rejecting that route shifts the pressure back onto Nuno and Nils Koppen to find a better centre-back, not merely a more expensive one.

Nuno Raises The Bar On West Ham’s Defensive Search

The instinct is right, provided West Ham execute it properly.

Fry offered Championship experience, availability and low-cost depth. He would have been a sensible safety-net signing for a club preparing for a demanding promotion campaign.

Nuno’s stance suggests West Ham want more than a body. That will appeal to supporters tired of reactive recruitment, but it also removes an easy option from the market.

The squad still needs defensive certainty. Axel Disasi’s loan spell has ended, while West Ham’s back line remains vulnerable to further senior movement before the window closes.

Passing on Fry only works if the next target offers clearer athletic upside, stronger distribution or Premier League-level recovery speed. Otherwise, West Ham risk turning a standards call into a self-inflicted gap.

The message is clear enough: West Ham are not shopping only for bodies. Nuno wants promotion-standard starters.

Now Koppen has to deliver one.
