Former England striker believes players let West Ham boss down in the Premier League run-in
  • West Ham were relegated to the Championship on Sunday
  • The Hammers beat Leeds United 3-0 but needed Tottenham Hotspur to lose
  • Wayne Rooney says the Irons players let their manager down too many times

West Ham United were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. The Hammers beat Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium but it was not enough, with Tottenham Hotspur doing their job and beating Everton 1-0 to stay up.

The Irons must now prepare for life in the second-tier after a disastrous campaign where they only looked like they could survive on minimal occasions. West Ham looked cast adrift at the beginning of 2026, but fought back, to even be out of the bottom three for a short period.

In the end, it was too little too late, with the Hammers relying on other results to survive, something that simply did not happen for the East London club.

Wayne Rooney says West Ham players let boss down

Speaking on BBC’s Match of The Day, former England and Manchester United frontman, Wayne Rooney, say’s the West Ham players have let down Nuno Espirito Santo too many times this season.

“I think they are good players, but I also think the teams that have come up recruited well, which has allowed them to stay in the Premier League,” Rooney said.

“I’ve watched West Ham quite a few times this season, and this is damning for the players. I don’t think the players have given enough.

“I’ve seen them walking back, not getting to the ball to get tackles in, stop crosses, and those are the fine margins you have to get right.”

Nuno’s future at the Hammers remains unsolved with the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss non-committal about next season, and it has since been revealed he went into crisis talks on Monday afternoon.

The club are looking to begin preparing for next season as soon as possible, with the Hammers needing to raise £150 million, and need to have manager in place quickly, whether that is to be Nuno or not.
