  • West Ham are relegated from the Premier League
  • The Hammers defeated Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium
  • Valentin Castellanos opened the scoring

Despite a 3-0 victory over Leeds United on Sunday, West Ham United was relegated from the Premier League.

The Hammers needed to defeat a Leeds team with nothing to play for at the London Stadium and hope Tottenham lost at home to Everton.

The Irons won convincingly thanks to second-half goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen, and Callum Wilson, but Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 victory over David Moyes’ Everton kept them up.

It ends the Irons’ 14-year Premier League run, with Championship football returning to East London in August.

Here are your player ratings.

Player ratings

Mads Hermansen – 6.5

The Dane dealt with much of Leeds’ aerial traffic, a demonstration of his gradual improvement throughout the season. Also, when questioned, answered with big stops.

Malick Diouf – 6.0

Naturally, most of the threat came from the Senegalese’s side, and to West Ham’s misfortune, this meant many of their attacks were down to luck of the draw, as Malick Diouf’s rawness would halt most of them.

Axel Disasi – 6.5

A commendable performer throughout his loan spell, and again today. It was evident that Nuno Espírito Santo and his coaching staff were quick to console the Frenchman, who will return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

Konstantinos Mavropanos – 6.5

Recently voted Hammer of the Year, the Greek international is an exceptional box defender who led in weathering Leeds’ various threats. His distribution was questionable, though.

Kyle Walker-Peters – 6.0

The pre-match discourse dominated his selection ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The right-back was a standard performer, nothing more or less.

Mateus Fernandes – 7.0

In what will likely be his final game, the midfield metronome showed why he will be playing at a much higher level. A tireless and tenacious presence, the Portuguese midfielder stood out from his soon-to-be ex-teammates with his pass for Jarrod Bowen’s second, highlighting that.

Tomas Soucek – 5.5

The Czech will leave as a fan favourite, maybe even more. But his displays in recent weeks have shown a 31-year-old who, outside both boxes, is pretty insignificant to the team’s overall play.

Crysencio Summerville – 6.0

Against his former side, the mercurial Dutch winger was one of the few bright sparks. However, his promise remains without production.

Jarrod Bowen – 7.0

Before the goal, the West Ham captain looked anything but the technical and spiritual leader that he was supposed to be. Jarrod Bowen’s disinterested play in the opening hour was striking, but his production can’t be questioned: he provided the corner for Castellanos’ opener and doubled the lead with a composed finish.

Pablo – 5.0

The under-fire Brazilian was on the receiving end of West Ham’s first credible chance but was unable to make any meaningful connection from yards out. Pablo would craft a few more half-chances but was substituted at the interval as his West Ham season tally finished at 0.

Valentin Castellanos – 7.0

Like Pablo, the Argentine industry is commendable in the club’s situation. The two attackers would combine just before the break, but nothing of substance would come of it. It’s to Castellanos credit that he maintains such an alert profile in West Ham’s inconsistent attack as he rose to score from Bowen’s corner.

Substitutes

Callum Wilson – 6.5

The 34-year-old striker is much better from the bench, as he showed only a few minutes coming on for Pablo and traditionally setting up Castellanos, who was unable to convert. Callum Wilson would smash home a stunner in the final seconds.

Mohamadou Kanté – 6.0

The midfield substitution had four touches of the ball in his two minutes.
