West Ham United have been relegated following a terrible Premier League season that dwindled out despite a final-day victory.

The Hammers’ fate was sealed despite beating Leeds United 3-0 on the last day, after Tottenham Hotspur edged out a 1-0 win against Everton, ending a 14-year stay for the East London club in the top flight and throwing the club into turmoil ahead of next season.

A campaign that began with high aspirations for change turned into one of the saddest episodes in recent memory at the London Stadium.

Fans watched in a state of flux as the club’s season of inconsistency and poor performances finally caught up to them despite a resounding second-half performance. West Ham chair David Sullivan was also in attendance, overlooking his collapsed project amongst the 60,000 who loathe his ownership.

After a laborious first half, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side turned up their intensity and netted three without reply as Valentín Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson all scored after the hour mark. It was a clinical edge that was missing in their run-in after tallying three losses in the previous three matches and scoring just once.

The atmosphere at full-time reflected the magnitude of the catastrophe. After months of growing fear, players dropped to the pitch, and supporters showcased their displeasure. Relegation is a crushing blow for a club that has recently experienced unforgettable European evenings after winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.

The man who brought that trophy back to the Hammers, David Moyes, could have helped prevent the club’s relegation as the Scot’s Everton took on Spurs during the league’s season finale. However, the Toffees were unable to make a dent on the Lilywhites’ goal.

Questions will now be asked at all levels of the football operation. Recruitment decisions, management choices, and the squad’s lack of balance are all expected to come under close examination in the coming weeks. Several senior players may move this summer, while the financial repercussions of relegation to the Championship will necessitate important decisions behind the scenes.

It is expected that the club will require over £100 million through player sales following relegation, with midfield star Mateus Fernandes expected to lead the exodus.
