  • West Ham enter the Premier League final day in the relegation zone
  • The Hammers are two points behind Tottenham Hotspur
  • Opta’s supercomputer has West Ham as 85.5% favourites to go down

West Ham United enter the Premier League’s final day with a fighting chance in their relegation battle. In their last outing, the Hammers suffered their third consecutive defeat and looked all but doomed for the drop.

However, Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat on Tuesday at the hands of Chelsea means that the relegation picture remains to be written. Roberto De Zerbi’s 17th-place side remains two points ahead of West Ham going into Sunday’s season finale.

West Ham are facing the prospect of being relegated from England’s top-flight for the first time since the 2010-11 season. A recent prediction from a renowned source has offered little help to appease those fears.

Only one combination of results can keep West Ham in the Premier League

As stated, West Ham’s form has taken a drastic turn since their unbeaten April, which had them entering this month in command of the survival battle. Yet, Spurs’ equal ability to flail has left the relegation door ajar.

The Opta Analyst supercomputer now rates Nuno Espírito Santo’s side at a 85.5% chance of relegation, while Spurs are placed at 14.5%, placing the former as heavy favourites to go down.

Opta’s supercomputer runs 10,000 simulations for their prediction model. That is because the supercomputer considers only the quality of the two teams in each match and forecasts based on previous results.

The Hammers face Leeds United on the final day, while Spurs host David Moyes’ Everton, with the Blues boss having the chance to do a favour for his former East London side. The only combination that will keep West Ham in the league is a win and a Spurs loss.

Given Spurs’ significant goal difference, a draw would practically keep them up even if the Irons win.

However, the aforementioned supercomputer, being a machine, does not consider emotion. It does not consider the influence of 60,000 nervous Spurs fans on their team. The Lilywhites have not won a home league game in 2026; it will take that and West Ham turning their rut around for a remarkable escape to take place. Something the club is more than aware of.
