- West Ham lost 3-1 to Newcastle United on Sunday
- Defeat leaves the Hammers on the brink of relegation
- The Irons are now likely to be a Championship team before the final day
West Ham United lost 3-1 to Newcastle United on Sunday to leave them on the brink of relegation from the Premier League. If Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea on Tuesday, the Hammers will go down, but realistically, a point for Spurs would do the job with the Irons significantly inferior goal difference.
Nuno Espirito Santo has already apologised for the West Ham performance, in which two early goals effectively ended the game. Now, defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has joined in the sentiment, telling the club’s official website that they left themselves too much to do.
“First of all, I think we have to say sorry to the fans,” Mavropanos said. “They were once again behind us, and we haven’t given them what they wanted, or what we wanted to do for this Club today.
“I don’t think we started well, and we didn’t have the sort of energy that we’ve had in the last couple of months. We made some silly mistakes, which is part of football sometimes, but unfortunately in this game it proved critical.
“In the second half we managed to come into the game a bit more, their goalkeeper made some good saves and we were unlucky in some situations, but the result is the result and it’s tough.”
The end of the road for West Ham
West Ham now have to wait and see if their fate is sealed on Tuesday night, or if they will get one more shot on the final day.
Mavropanos isn’t hiding away from the fact the end is near, but promises to be professional and try put on a performance better than yesterday.
“It’s looking tough. We have to wait and see what happens in the Tottenham game, but it’s a tough situation. The only thing we can do right now is stay professional and do everything we can to win our next game.
“Again, we know the fans will be hurting because we weren’t able to do what we wanted for them today. We just have to see what happens, and see what happens during the week.”
