  • West Ham sit two points below Premier League safety
  • The Hammers retain interest in Pedro Goncalves
  • The Portuguese midfielder will only join if the club are in the top flight

West Ham United have remained interested in Sporting CP’s Pedro Goncalves throughout this season, though their fight to stay in the Premier League has put any move on hold.

The Hammers sit two points from safety, and head to Newcastle United this evening knowing they have to win to guarantee the survival fight goes down to the last day. Being two points adrift, West Ham also need Tottenham Hotspur to slip up if they are to complete the great escape.

Whilst summer business will not currently be on the mind of Nuno Espirito Santo and the Irons hierarchy, the club know they need to strengthen in the summer, not only to be better, but also balance the books. With Mateus Fernandes expected to leave regardless, it is that money that could be available to invest in the squad.

West Ham given update in pursuit of Pedro Goncalves

A report from Jornal de Noticias, states that West Ham are still very much interested in Goncalves but new information means the Hammers have to stay in the top flight to secure the services of the Portuguese midfielder.

Goncalves club, Sporting, are ready to negotiate his exit, and several other Premier League sides are interested in securing the signature of the 27-year-old.

However, it is now understood that whilst the midfielder is keen on a move to England and the Irons, a non-negotiable to the move is that they are in the top flight. The Portugal international has no desire to play in the second tier of English football, and given the other interest in him, he is right to make that call.

This season, Goncalves has managed 15 goals and nine assists for Sporting, which is not even the best by his standards, being his fourth best season in the green and white colours of the Lisbon side.
