- West Ham sit two points from Premier League safety
- The Hammers head to Newcastle United this weekend
- James Corden has told why he thinks the club is in this situation
West Ham United are two points from safety with two games to go. The Hammers lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday but the game was mired by a controversial VAR call that saw a late equaliser ruled out for the hosts. West Ham now go Newcastle United this weekend, knowing they have to win to keep their Premier League survival hopes alive.
With the Hammers future in the balance, many have been waying in with their verdict on why the club is in this situation. Celebrity fan, James Corden, told talkSPORT, just why he thinks the Irons are here.
“If we go down, it’s not going to be because of that goal or that decision (against Arsenal on Sunday).
“We’re going to go down because of decisions that have been made over the last two, three, five or ten years at West Ham United. That’s why we’re going to go down.
“There is a very real issue at West Ham that I think every fan can feel, which is a lack of culture and a lack of identity.
“I think we’ve just been getting through stuff, and lots of fans would go, ‘yeah, well, you know…’
“And I think things like the Conference League win in Prague… I was there, it was the greatest night and no fan would ever give it up, it was amazing, but I do think that season papered over a lot of cracks that lots of West Ham fans could see.
“There’s just a lack of vision within the club. Everything feels reactive. Nothing feels particularly proactive.”
James Corden on the future of West Ham
Whilst Corden has his appreciation for current boss Nuno Espirito Santo, he believes the club did not do enough when David Moyes was in charge. Whilst Moyes won the club a European trophy, his tenure could have been so much more with the right backing.
“It hasn’t worked since David Moyes. I don’t know if I agree with that, and I really love David Moyes.
“What he did for our football club was incredible and he is a brilliant, brilliant manager.
“But any fan would tell you that those seasons under David Moyes were depreciating returns.”
Corden also thinks they should try to keep Nuno, irrelevant of if they go down or stay up, and named his ideal replacement should the current West Ham boss walk.
“I think Nuno is brilliant. I hope he stays. I doubt he will, but I’d love it. If he doesn’t, it should be Scott Parker, no question.
