The situation: How the weekend’s results change West Ham’s survival chances

Share
  • West Ham lost 3-0 to Brentford on Saturday
  • The loss drops the Hammers into the bottom three
  • Tottenham Hotspur beat Aston Villa 2-1

West Ham United fell back into the Premier League’s relegation zone as they lost 3-0 to Brentford. The crushing loss left the door open for the Hammers to drop down the table and with Tottenham Hotspurs victory over Aston Villa on Sunday night, it was the worst case scenario for West Ham.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team had their chances in the first-half on Saturday afternoon, but failed to show in the second, and finished the 90 minutes roundly beaten.

With the Irons losing it left the door open for Spurs. Aston Villa named a much-changed team with Thursday night’s Europa League tie on their mind and Tottenham took the initiative, with Conor Gallagher scoring early. Richarlison would score in the second-half and it was more than enough to guide Spurs to not only three points and a ticket out of the relegation zone.

Nottingham Forest took another huge step towards safety as they dismantled Chelsea 3-1. Vitor Periera’s side also have eyes on the Europa League, but the changes made no difference to the performance as Taiwo Awonyi scored twice in the comprehensive victory.

Crystal Palace may be all but safe but could not stop themselves from losing 3-0 to AFC Bournemouth. Like a lot of the team’s in this scenario, they too have a European tie on Thursday. Unlike Forest, he Eagles were torn apart by a Cherries side chasing the top six this season.

Leeds United all but confirmed their place in the Premier League next season, as they beat already-relegated Burnley 3-1 on Friday night. The Lilywhites got over their FA Cup semi-final loss in style with Anton Stach, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all netting in the win.

The bottom two

Burnley could not find any fight as they lost to Leeds United. The Clarets are firmly looking at next season with what looks like a very tired team, that just never had the quality this season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers on the other hand, put on a strong performance as they drew 1-1 with Sunderland. Wolves came from behind to secure the point as Dan Ballard saw red in the first-half.

The midlands side could catch Burnley this weekend, taking them off the bottom of the table.
