- West Ham lost 3-0 to Brentford on Saturday
- The result dropped the Hammers back into the Premier League’s bottom three
- Jamie Carragher says there is still hope for the Irons
West Ham United’s Premier League survival fight took a blow this weekend as they suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss to Brentford. The loss saw the Hammers drop back into the bottom three, with Tottenham Hotspur beating Aston Villa on Sunday night.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are now one point from safety and have just three games left to change that, but their fate no longer remains in their hands. This weekend, West Ham host title-chasing Arsenal, before heading north to take on Newcastle United. The season ends back at the London Stadium, with the Irons playing Leeds United, who are now all but secure in the Premier League.
The Hammers know that they will now have to better Spurs results over the next three weeks, with Nottingham Forest also all but out of the relegation scrap. Despite the disappointing outlook, one Sky Sports pundit believes there is still hope for the Irons.
Jamie Carragher believes there is still hope for West Ham
Speaking on Sky Sports before Everton‘s 3-3 draw with Manchester City, former Liverpool and England defender stated that there is still hope for West Ham.
“Are they (Hammers) going to beat Arsenal? I find that very difficult to believe,” Carragher said.
“So they’ve almost got to hope that Leeds could go there (to Spurs) and get a point.
“Could they (Irons) get a point at home to Arsenal? Yes.
“If they match Tottenham’s result and then go to here (Hammers playing Newcastle away and Spurs facing Chelsea away), both tough games, I know Chelsea were awful today, but you can imagine the motivation inside that club and their supporters wanting to send Tottenham down. You can imagine that.
“Then you look at those two fixtures and you think, could West Ham get a better result than Spurs in that set-up? Because that would be a tough game away at Chelsea for Tottenham. That’s the only thing I can think in terms of West Ham.
“But this situation here gives Tottenham a great opportunity to sort of almost put it to bed.
“That’s what West Ham have got to hope, that they can get it to the last day.”
