  • Mads Hermansen made his senior debut for Denmark in a 4-0 win over North Macedonia
  • Denmark will now play Czechia on Tuesday night for a place at the World Cup
  • Hermansen would be the nation’s first-choice with Kasper Schmeichel injured

West Ham United’s Mads Hermansen has been a big part of the changes that have helped the team in 2026. At the end of January, Nuno Espirito Santo made the decision to reinstate the Danish shot stopper and has been reaping the rewards ever since.

Hermansen has been rewarded with another call up to the Denmark national team, this time as the team’s leading goalkeeper with Kasper Schmeichel out for the foreseeable future. The 25-year-old finally made his senior debut last week, in a 4-0 win over North Macedonia that set’s up the Danes to face Tomas Soucek’s Czechia for a place at this summer’s World Cup.

With only one cap to his name, Hermansen was keen not to get carried away, and spoke of continuing to work after the game.

“I would very much like to do that,” he told Danish outlet TV 2 Sport. “Then I’ll say yes, thank you, if it becomes an opportunity. But it’s not something you can say that I will be for the next ten years.

“It’s about me performing every single day at the club, continuing to improve and playing good matches. And then I have to make sure I get into the national team with good performances under my belt.

“That’s what it’s all about. Just because I’ve made my debut and maybe get one more game, it doesn’t mean it’s a permanent solution.”

Mads Hermansen’s top drawer West Ham performances

Hermansen has been so important to West Ham in the latter part of the season. After being dropped under former boss Graham Potter, Nuno and his staff have reinvested in the keeper, giving him another chance and instilling him with confidence.

As part of a defensive unit that includes Axel Disasi, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos, the shot stopper has helped to form the most important part of this Hammers team. This season Hermansen has four clean sheets and followed it up with another in his Denmark debut.

The 25-year-old will appear for his nation once again as they play Czechia tomorrow night. The winner of the game will book their place to North America for this summer’s World Cup. A win would give Hermansen more incentive this season, with the Dane knowing he needs to keep performing to make the squad.
