- West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is on international duty with Greece
- Konstantinos Mavropanos took a blow to the head in their friendly with Paraguay
- The Hammers defender will not take part in their game with Hungary on Tuesday night
West Ham United are deep in a relegation fight this season. The Hammers can ill-afford to lose any players in the Premier League run-in, with it being all hands on deck for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.
One of the Hammers most important players in 2026 has been Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Greek central defender has been a key part of the changes made at the club, with the 28-year-old taking charge of the back line with Axel Disasi and Jean-Clair Todibo.
In a worrying turn of event, Mavropanos took a heavy blow to the head in Greece’s friendly with Paraguay. What once looked inconspicuous could now be a nightmare for West Ham.
According to Greek media outlet, Sportal, the defender’s international camp is basically over and Mavropanos will play no part in the nation’s game with Hungary on Tuesday night.
There is not a lot of information on the injury as of yet but the absence of the player is said to be more cautionary rather than a diagnosis of something that would see the 28-year-old miss more time.
Konstantinos Mavropanos’s importance to West Ham
Since the beginning of 2026, Mavropanos has been a mainstay in Nuno’s Irons team. The central defender has been a key part of the turnaround and the Hammers cannot afford to lose him if they want to complete the turnaround.

| Appearances | Goals | Clean Sheets |
| 28 | 1 | 4 |
Whilst defensively, the Greece international has put his body on the line, making numerous goal-line clearances and blocks, including stopping an Erling Haaland shot with his face, Mavropanos has given much more.
At the other end of the pitch, the 28-year-old has stepped up as well. The player scored the equalizer in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City and netted the winning penalty in the FA Cup shootout victory over Brentford.
West Ham will be holding their breath when Mavropanos returns to London this week as they know that losing him is not an option.
